# See Which Ad or Email Brought Each Lead

> Add campaign tags to the links in your emails and ads, and see on each new lead which campaign brought them

When you share a link to your site in an email, an ad or a social post, a few tags on the end of the link tell Hiveku where each visitor came from. When that visitor fills in a form on your site, the new lead in your CRM shows the campaign that brought them.

This guide tags a link for Northwind's October newsletter, signs up through it once as a test visitor, and finds the campaign on the new lead.

## Tag your link

Add these tags to the end of the page address, after a `?`, joined by `&`:

| Tag | What it says | Example |
| - | - | - |
| `utm_source` | Where the link is | `newsletter`, `google`, `instagram` |
| `utm_medium` | The kind of channel | `email`, `cpc` (paid ads), `social` |
| `utm_campaign` | Your name for the campaign | `october-roast` |

Northwind's newsletter link to its sign-up page looked like this:

```
https://www.example.com/?utm_source=newsletter&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=october-roast
```

Use lowercase words with dashes and the same names every time, so one campaign doesn't show up as two. Two more tags are optional: `utm_content` tells two links in the same email apart, and `utm_term` holds an ad's keyword.

Link straight to the page with the form: Hiveku reads the tags on the page where the visitor fills it in.

## Send it, and watch the leads come in

Put the tagged link in your email, ad or post. Northwind opened it and signed up once as a test visitor, [theo.brandt@example.com](mailto:theo.brandt@example.com).

**1. Open the new lead**

Click **CRM** in the left rail, then **Contacts**, and click the new contact. Under **Contact info**, **Lead source** says which kind of channel brought them: the `email` medium shows as **Email marketing**.

The lead's source

**2. See the campaign**

In the contact's activity, the **Origin** card shows the **Original source**, the first one that brought this person. Click **Show UTM attribution + history** to see the tags from the link: here the newsletter, email and the october-roast campaign.

The campaign that brought them

**Current UTMs** show the latest link they came through, if they come back later through another campaign.

## See every lead from a channel

On **Contacts**, click **Filters** and pick a channel under **Original source**, such as **Email marketing**. The list shows only the leads that first came from it, with how many there are.

Every lead that first came from email

**Export** downloads the filtered list as a CSV file.

## Good to know

* **Ad clicks are tagged for you.** Google and Microsoft ads add their own click tag to each link, so those leads show as **Paid search** even without your own tags. Add `utm_campaign` to tell your campaigns apart.
* **No tags, no campaign.** A visitor who types your address or uses a bookmark shows as **Direct traffic**.
* **Leads that don't come from your site.** Calls, chats and imported contacts show as **Offline sources**.
* **How it works.** For what Hiveku records when someone arrives from an ad, see [How Attribution Works](/marketing/attribution.md).
* **Send a test first.** Open your tagged link yourself, fill in the form with a test address, and check the new lead before the campaign goes out.
