# Choose Where Calls to Your Number Ring

> Send your number's calls to one phone, several phones, a queue, a phone menu, voicemail or the AI receptionist, and route callers from some area codes somewhere else

Every Hiveku number has one place its calls go first: one person's phone, a group of phones, a queue, a phone menu, a voicemail box or the AI receptionist. You can change it at any time, and send callers from particular area codes somewhere else.

This guide looks at where Northwind's main number rings and the choices for changing it.

## See where calls go now

Click **Communications** in the left rail, then **Routing** at the top, then **Numbers**. **Routes to** says where each number's calls go. Northwind's main number rings all of Jamie's phones.

Note what it says before you change anything, so you can set it back.

## Choose a new place

**1. Edit the number**

Click the pencil at the end of the number's row.

**2. Pick where calls go**

Under **Inbound routes to**, pick the kind of place, then which one in the list under it:

* **Extension**: one phone, such as a desk phone or the app on someone's mobile.
* **Ring group**: several phones at once or in turn. See [Ring Several People at Once](https://docs.hiveku.com/how-tos/phone/ring-group.md).
* **Queue**: callers wait in line with hold music. See [Hold Callers in a Queue](https://docs.hiveku.com/how-tos/phone/call-queue.md).
* **AI receptionist**: the AI answers. See [Let the AI Receptionist Answer Your Phone](https://docs.hiveku.com/how-tos/phone/ai-receptionist.md).
* **Voicemail**: straight to a voicemail box.
* **IVR**: a "press 1 for..." menu. See [Build a Phone Menu](https://docs.hiveku.com/how-tos/phone/phone-menu.md).

Calls go to one phone

**3. Send some callers somewhere else (optional)**

On the right, **Route by caller location** sends callers from the area codes you list to a different place. Click **Add location rule**, name it, type each area code and press Enter, and pick where those calls go. Rules are checked from the top and the first match wins; everyone else follows the main route.

**Direct forward** sends every call to another phone number, such as a mobile outside Hiveku, and overrides everything above. Leave it blank unless that is what you want.

A forward, and a rule for Portland callers

**4. Save**

Click **Save changes**. **Routes to** on the number's row shows the new place; if it still shows the old one, reload the page.

## Good to know

* **Nothing set?** A number with no route rejects its calls, so always pick a place.
* **Open and closed hours.** For different handling during and after business hours, send the number to a [phone menu](https://docs.hiveku.com/how-tos/phone/phone-menu.md) and set its business hours there.
