# Add a Search Box to Your Site

> Ask the builder AI for a search box that finds what visitors type as they type it, and try it in the preview

A search box helps visitors find what they came for, such as a drink on your menu, a product or an article. The builder AI can add one that searches the content already on your site and shows matches as the visitor types.

This guide adds a search box to the café menu on Northwind's Pearl District site.

## Ask for the search box

Open the website in the builder and tell the AI in the chat where the box goes, what it should search, and what to show.

![The chat message: Put a search box on the café menu page: as the visitor types, it finds drinks and food by name or description and shows the matching menu items. The request

The AI reads how your pages and their content are built before it changes anything. If something is unclear, it asks you first and offers choices to tap. Here it searches the menu items kept in the site's CMS, so the search stays up to date when you change the menu.

## Try it in the preview

Scroll to the search box in the preview and type a word. The matching items show at once, with a count. Clear the box with the cross to see everything again.

Searching for milk

Try a word that should match nothing, to check what visitors see then.

![Search the menu with bagel typed, 0 menu items match your search, and the message No menu items matched bagel. Try another name or description, outlined](https://mintcdn.com/locusdigital/Em5pIn-OZEdyI3c2/images/how-tos/site-builder/se-03-no-match-closeup.webp?fit=max\&auto=format\&n=Em5pIn-OZEdyI3c2\&q=85\&s=d266bc99650aee97f45cea185a847a1f)

No matches

When you are happy with it, [publish your changes](/how-tos/site-builder/publish.md) so visitors get the search box too.

## Good to know

* **Say what to search.** Name the page, the content (menu items, products, blog posts) and the details to match, such as names or descriptions.
* **Content in the CMS stays searchable.** New items you add in the CMS show up in the search without asking the AI again. See [Edit Your Content in the CMS](/how-tos/site-builder/edit-cms-content.md).
* **Changed your mind?** [Undo a Change](/how-tos/site-builder/undo-a-change.md) shows how to take a chat change back.
