# Check Your Domain's DNS and Email Records

> Run a DNS report on any domain to see where its DNS is hosted and whether its email records are set up, and see every domain your sites use

A DNS report reads a domain's records straight from its nameservers and tells you, in plain words, where its DNS is hosted, whether it receives email, and whether the records that protect your email are in place. It changes nothing, so you can run it on any domain, at any time.

This guide runs a report on northwindroasters.com and opens it in the list of domains Northwind's sites use.

## Run a report

**1. Open Domains**

Point to your profile picture at the bottom of the left rail, click **Settings**, then **Domains**.

**2. Type the domain**

Under **Run a DNS report**, type the domain and click **Run report**. It takes a few seconds.

The first box says where the domain's DNS is hosted and what that means if you move the domain. Northwind's DNS is at GoDaddy.

![Run a DNS report with northwindroasters.com typed and the Run report button, outlined; and the summary: this domain uses GoDaddy's nameservers, with its two nameservers, outlined](https://mintcdn.com/locusdigital/wnvs-fJmAs0r3n91/images/how-tos/websites/dns-01-run-closeup.webp?fit=max\&auto=format\&n=wnvs-fJmAs0r3n91\&q=85\&s=85df41a3079c4027135066dd71806417)

## Read the checks

Each check has a green tick when it is fine, an orange warning when it needs a look, and a red cross when something must be fixed first. A gray question mark means the report couldn't read that record. The checks are:

* **Registry delegation**: which nameservers answer for the domain.
* **DNSSEC**: whether the domain is signed, which matters only if you move its nameservers.
* **Mail routing (MX)**: whether the domain receives email.
* **Sender policy (SPF)**, **DMARC policy** and **DKIM signing keys**: the records that tell other mail services your email is really from you.
* **Certificate authority policy (CAA)**: which certificate authorities may issue certificates for the domain.

![The checks with green ticks for Registry delegation, DNSSEC, SPF (its value blurred), DMARC and CAA; and orange warnings, outlined, for Mail routing (MX), no MX records so the domain does not receive email, and DKIM signing keys, none found under the selectors checked](https://mintcdn.com/locusdigital/wnvs-fJmAs0r3n91/images/how-tos/websites/dns-02-checks-closeup.webp?fit=max\&auto=format\&n=wnvs-fJmAs0r3n91\&q=85\&s=5dec726d0814b5aab950b770c3295c9f)

Here the warnings are expected: Northwind doesn't receive email at northwindroasters.com, and it sends its marketing email from mail.northwindroasters.com. The report looks for signing keys only on the main domain, under a short list of common names, so it doesn't see those. A warning tells you to check; it isn't always a problem. The box under the checks lists what a report can't see.

## See the domains your sites use

**Connected domains** lists every domain on the account, across all your sites. Click one to see each hostname, the site and environment it serves, and whether its certificate is active.

![Connected domains with northwindroasters.com marked Live and DNS elsewhere, its DNS report button outlined, and its table of two hostnames, the site New Live Northwind Coffee Roasters, the environment, and verified and active, outlined](https://mintcdn.com/locusdigital/wnvs-fJmAs0r3n91/images/how-tos/websites/dns-03-connected-closeup.webp?fit=max\&auto=format\&n=wnvs-fJmAs0r3n91\&q=85\&s=7b95e880e8a5708da7b487893d2d5177)

After you change a record where you manage DNS, click **DNS report** beside the domain to read its records again. **Refresh** only reloads the list.

## Good to know

* **Nothing is changed.** A report only reads. Under a connected domain, **Let Hiveku manage this DNS** and the red link that removes the domain from the account are separate actions that do change things.
* **Moving a domain to Hiveku?** **Move a domain you already own**, on the same page, checks what the move would do before anything happens.
