Every business tracks something the CRM doesn’t ask for out of the box: how many seats a café has, which roast a buyer prefers, how much coffee they go through. Add it as a custom field, and it appears on every record of that kind. This guide adds a Monthly volume (lb) field to Northwind’s contacts and fills it in for Priya Shah of Fernwood Bakery.

Add the field

Open the record fields

Click CRM in the left rail, then Setup at the top, then Settings. Under Record fields, click Contacts, Companies or Deals.

Name it and pick its type

Under Custom fields, type the field’s name in Field label…, pick its type, such as number, text or date, and click Add. It joins the list above.

The select and multiselect types need a list of choices, which this page can’t set yet. Use text or number for now.

Choose where it shows

Record layout, under the fields, sets the details panel on every record for everyone on the account. Click the eye to show or hide a field, and the arrows or the handle to move it. The Preview shows the result. Click Save layout when you have made changes.

A field you add is shown to start with. If it doesn’t appear in the layout yet, reload the page.

Fill it in on a record

Open the record

Open the contact, company or deal and find Custom fields in the panel on the left. It starts folded: click its heading to open it.

Type the value

Click the pencil on the field, type the value and click Save.

Good to know

  • One list for everyone. Custom fields and the record layout apply to the whole account.
  • Deleting a field. The trash can next to a field in Custom fields deletes the field and every value saved in it, on every record. It asks first, and it can’t be undone.
